A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
