Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
